Couple of points.
CSM is almost certainly a tax-write off business expense to CCP. This needs taking into account. Anyone who runs their own business will appreciate that there is very little difference between the cost of taking a client out to lunch to discuss a contract and simply paying over the cash to the tax man.
That said.
I do agree the current CSM has some unprofessional members who have done a fairly poor job.
(of course it also has decent members who have done a decent job) Any elected council is always a mix of good and bad.
Sure its annoying that it seems to have devolved into a Nullsec bloc-vote thing in the main but the solution to that is for more players to vote not less.
I also have issues with the way the current CSM let CCP off the hook on the "vanity items" category for NeX and thats something I'd definitely like to see re-addressed (and properly this time) in the future.
But then again the CSM DID help in publicising the player protests against Incarna mandatory CQ and helped get our message out to the gaming media.
Plus and minus, it really isn't as a black and white as some in this thread suggest.
There is a valid discussion to be had on whether the CSM project as a whole has helped or hindered CCP/community relations in the long term I guess. But currently I think there is a fairly abusive cycle of angry people looking to scapegoat (well anything) and some members of the CSM thinking "well screw you!" (and counter trolling).
Its all hogwash though.
The blame for this current situation falls pure and clearly on CCP Senior Management who have mismanaged the Eve Online game for several years now. The current situation is not the fault of CSM/rank and file CCP devs/angry players or even Icelandic volcano gods.
I still believe in the CSM project and I think it is a good thing for Eve Online and the community. The fact that people got elected you may not like (or respect) should just be a challenge to get better people elected next time.

If CCP was smart they would restructure the whole thing and run their PR like every other company in the industry. There are much more successful ways to interact with your subscribers and has been proven out by most of the industry at this point. This laughable excuse of representation is nothing more than a bunch of children playing dress up and stroking their e-peens.
The irony is that almost all of CCP's current problems stemmed from them employing "industry experts" who wanted to make Eve Online "more like the rest of the industry" not realizing that once you homogenize the offering to that extent you can no longer compete on originality and indy vibes and people start looking too closely at the creaky game engine and slow content provision.
Successful CCP = wierdo icelandic hard core hands on visionary coder CCP.
Crap CCP = wannabe like MT cash store avatar dress up dumb down CCP.
Because you start competing head to head with the big guys like SONY and Blizzard and EA and whoever then a game like Eve suffers greatly from its lack of polish.
Whereas if you are content to do things differently for gamers that like a bit of difference and eccentricity you grow a whole bunch of subscribers.
Strange that isn't it?

It's called the Foreverwar for a reason. I'm just disgusted that Avon is using 120 people losing their jobs right before the holiday to whine about supercaps. It's horrible.
Listen if I can chill out and have decent discussions with Goonswarm pilots now then you can chill out with Bob pilots. We've all got far bigger fish to fry this winter. This game needs saving from the lunacy of mad philosopher kings otherwise we'll all be forced to ride epic mounts and cull magic tadpoles in the future.

Some of the posters in this thread seriously need to take a chill pill and step away from the keyboard.
Something is seriously wrong when goon posters end up sounding reasonable in comparison to the common standard.
(And hell, I'm not exactly a fan of goons!)
